Owners are always surprised that a leaking sunroof usually isn't a failed seal. The roof is meant to admit some water; the rubber seal only sheds the bulk of it. Everything that gets past — rain running off the glass, splash, condensation — collects in a channel around the roof aperture and is meant to run away through drain tubes at the four corners, down inside the pillars, and out under the car at the sills and wheel arches.
That system works perfectly until the drains block. Then the channel overflows its inboard edge, and the water follows gravity into the cabin. The roof didn't fail; its plumbing did.
Why they clog
The drains are narrow, and the world is full of things that fit into narrow tubes and then stop:
- Leaves, seeds and blossom — especially if you park under trees.
- Pollen and tree sap, which turn to a sticky paste that sets in the channel.
- General road dust that combines with the above into a firm plug.
It's cumulative and seasonal. Autumn is the classic killer; a car that drained fine all summer can block solid in a fortnight of leaf-fall.
The symptoms, in the order they arrive

Modern cars sit control modules low in the floor, often under the front seats — things like airbag and comfort/gateway control units. A sunroof flood doesn't just wet the carpet; it can drown those modules. That's how a blocked drain turns into airbag lights, electrical chaos and a repair bill that dwarfs the entire preventive job many times over. Treat any unexplained damp on the floor of a panoramic-roof car as urgent, not annoying.
The 20-minute job: clearing the drains
You need almost nothing: a bottle of water, and something soft and flexible to coax a blockage. The method matters more than the tools.
- Open the roof and find the drain openings at the four corners of the aperture (front two are easy; the rear pair sit at the back corners).
- Pour a little water into a front drain and watch where it exits underneath — typically near the front wheel arch or sill. If it flows out freely, that drain is clear. Repeat for all four.
- For a slow or blocked drain, clear it gently. A length of soft trimmer/strimmer line or a piece of fishing leader, fed in carefully, will break up a paste plug near the top. Then flush with water to carry the debris out.
- Confirm all four run free and exit where they should. Job done.
Do this seasonally — and always after autumn if you park under anything leafy. Twenty minutes, twice a year, is the whole of the maintenance.
No high-pressure air, no compressor blast. The drain tubes are only pushed onto their fittings inside the pillars; a sharp blast of pressure can pop a tube off inside the car body, and now every future drain empties directly into the pillar — a far worse leak that you can't even see. Use gentle flushing and a soft probe. And no coat-hangers or stiff wire: a rigid tool can puncture or dislodge the tube. Soft and patient beats forceful every time.
Where the four drains actually go
Knowing the route helps you both test and diagnose. Broadly, the front pair of drains run down the A-pillars and exit low at the front — near the front wheel arches or front sills. The rear pair run down the rear pillars and exit toward the rear arches. That's why the location of your wet patch is a clue: a soaked front footwell points at a front drain; a wet rear footwell or water in the boot area points at a rear one. When you pour water in to test, go and look underneath at the matching exit and confirm it's flowing there.
If a tube has already come adrift
If a previous “fix” (or a compressed-air blast) has knocked a drain tube off its fitting inside a pillar, you'll see the signature: the corner drains freely when you pour water in — because the water is now dumping straight into the pillar cavity and the cabin, rather than backing up. Persistent interior wetness with apparently “clear” drains is the tell. Re-seating a dislodged tube is a trim-out job — the pillar and headliner trim have to come back to reach it — which is precisely why the gentle, no-pressure method matters so much when clearing them.
While you're at it: the other cabin water paths
The sunroof gets the blame, but a Mk7 has a couple of other ways to let water in, worth a glance if you're chasing damp:
- The plenum / bulkhead drains at the base of the windscreen can clog with the same leaf debris and overflow toward the cabin or the electrics in that area.
- Door membranes. Each door has a plastic vapour barrier behind the trim; if it's torn or an old repair left it unsealed, water runs into the footwell and mimics a sunroof leak.
If the drains are clear and the interior is still getting wet, these are the next places to look before you blame the roof again.
Spotting a car that's already been flooded
Because the damage hides under trim, a previously-flooded Mk7 can look fine in the advert. On a viewing, make this part of the routine:
- Use your nose. A musty, damp smell — or a suspiciously strong air-freshener masking one — is the first flag.
- Press the carpets and lift them at the edges. Feel for damp underlay; look for tide marks or staining, and for surface rust on the floor pan or seat rails.
- Open the spare-wheel well. Water and rust here are a strong sign of past ingress.
- Check under the front seats for corroded connectors or a replaced/disturbed module — evidence of a previous water event and its aftermath.
- Scan for electrical faults and history of airbag or comfort-system warnings, which can trace back to a soaking.
A car with clear drains and a dry, clean-smelling interior is exactly what you want. One with damp carpets and a cheerful pine tree hanging from the mirror deserves a very careful look underneath it.
The panoramic roof is meant to drain water, not seal it out — so the drains, not the seal, are what keep your car dry. Clear all four corners with a gentle flush and a soft probe seasonally, and the problem never begins.
Never blast them with compressed air or poke them with wire; a tube popped off inside a pillar is a much worse leak. And take any damp floor seriously the moment you find it — the modules under the seats are what turn a twenty-minute job you skipped into a bill you won't forget.
