Two families cover almost everything petrol in the Mk7. EA211 is the small-capacity range — 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, later 1.5 — belt-driven, aluminium, light, designed around economy. EA888 Gen 3 is the bigger stuff: 1.8 and 2.0 TSI, chain-driven, iron-crankcase-derived, designed around output. On the diesel side it's EA288 throughout: 1.6 and 2.0 TDI.
That split matters more than the badge, because it determines what will eventually go wrong.
The only number that matters
Not power. Not the official economy figure. The number that decides whether you enjoy owning a Mk7 is:
(fuel + tyres + the known big bill ÷ how long until it lands)
That last term is where the range separates. Every engine here has one characteristic large expense that is not a matter of luck. Knowing which one you're signing up for — and roughly when — is most of the decision.
The water pump / thermostat housing module is a plastic assembly that weeps, and it is the single most common significant Mk7 bill regardless of which small TSI you buy. It is not a reason to avoid the engine family — it's a reason to budget for it once, and to check for pink crust when buying. The EA888 has its own version of the same story, in a slightly different place.
The petrol engines
1.0 TSI — better than it has any right to be
Three cylinders, mostly a Mk7.5-era engine, in 85 or 110 PS. On paper it's a joke in a family hatch. In practice it's one of the sweeter things in the range: it revs cleanly, it sounds characterful in a way the 1.4 doesn't, and because it's small it's cheap on everything downstream — tyres are small, insurance is low, and there's less of it to go wrong.
The catch is honest rather than hidden. It works hard. Load it with four people and luggage and the real-world economy converges with a 1.4's, because you're using all of it all the time. It's a brilliant urban and commuter engine and a mediocre motorway-at-85-with-a-full-boot engine.
Buy if: your Mk7 will spend its life doing under 40 miles a day, mostly solo.
1.2 TSI — the one to skip, mostly
Early Mk7 fitment, 85 and 105 PS, replaced by the 1.0 for good reason. Nothing is wrong with it exactly, but it's the least interesting answer to every question: not as characterful as the 1.0, not as flexible as the 1.4, and old enough now that you're buying an early Mk7 with everything that implies. If a 1.2 is cheap enough that the price is the whole argument, fine — that's a legitimate reason. Just don't talk yourself into it on merit.
1.4 TSI — the default, and rightly
The engine most Mk7s have, in 122, 140 and 150 PS. The 140 and 150 versions carry ACT — cylinder deactivation, shutting down two cylinders at light load. People are suspicious of ACT on principle; in practice it has been one of the less troublesome clever things VW has done, and it works invisibly.
The 1.4 is the range's centre of gravity: enough torque to make the car feel unstressed, small enough to be cheap, and common enough that every independent garage in Europe has seen a thousand of them. That last point is worth real money over a decade of ownership.
Weak point: the water pump module, as above. Budget for it, ideally alongside the belt.
Buy if: you want a Mk7 and don't have a specific reason to want something else. This is the correct default and there's no shame in it.
1.5 TSI EVO — brilliant, with an asterisk
The 1.4's replacement from around 2017, in 130 and 150 PS. Genuinely a step forward: more efficient, more flexible, a cleverer turbo. On a good one, the 150 is the nicest small petrol in the range.
The asterisk is well documented and worth understanding rather than fearing. Early 1.5s had a low-speed hesitation — the throttle-tip-in lurch owners called kangarooing — arising from how aggressively the engine was calibrated to run lean at light load. VW addressed it in software. Cars that have had the update are, by most accounts, fine.
So the buying rule is specific: test it at 30–40 mph in a high gear with a gentle throttle, which is exactly the condition that provokes it, and ask whether the software update has been applied. This is a question with a documented answer at a dealer, not a mystery.
Buy if: you're shopping Mk7.5 and can test-drive properly. It's the better engine — if it's the updated one.
1.8 TSI — the quiet enthusiast's answer
EA888 Gen 3, 180 PS, and a much bigger deal in North America than in Europe. It's the sleeper choice: close to GTI flexibility, none of the GTI's insurance premium, tyre bills or attention. On a torque curve it does a very convincing impression of a car that costs considerably more.
Weak point: oil consumption on some examples. This is the 1.8's reputation and it's partly deserved and partly inherited from the older Gen 2 engines. Gen 3 improved matters substantially; some cars still drink. The relevant thing for a buyer is that “uses a bit of oil” covers an enormous range, from a manufacturer-normal small amount over an interval to something that needs a PCV valve or worse. Ask the owner how often they top it up and how much goes in — the answer to that is more useful than any spec.
Buy if: you want GTI-adjacent pace at 1.4 running costs and you're willing to check the dipstick like an adult.
2.0 TSI — GTI and R
The engine everyone actually wants: 220 or 230 PS in Mk7 GTI (230/245 in Mk7.5 with the Performance Pack), 300 or 310 PS in the R. Same EA888 Gen 3 architecture as the 1.8, considerably more of everything.
It's a strong engine and it responds to tuning almost embarrassingly well, which is both its appeal and its risk as a used purchase — a meaningful share of used GTIs have been mapped, and a meaningful share of those were mapped by someone with a laptop and confidence. That's not automatically a problem, but it's something to know rather than discover.
Running cost reality: the engine isn't the expensive bit. The tyres are. A GTI on 18s or an R on 19s changes the arithmetic of ownership far more than the fuel does, and it's the cost people consistently forget to model before buying.
Buy if: you want the car for what it is, and you've priced a set of tyres before signing.
The diesels
1.6 TDI — a specialist tool
EA288, 90–115 PS depending on year. Extraordinary economy on a long run; genuinely 60+ mpg territory without trying. It is also, in 2026, an increasingly awkward thing to own in a city, and that's a political fact as much as a mechanical one.
Weak point: the DPF, and specifically what short journeys do to it. A diesel that never gets hot enough to complete a regeneration accumulates soot it can't burn, and then ash it can never burn. This is not a design flaw; it's a mismatch between the car and the owner. A 1.6 TDI that's done 120,000 motorway miles may be in better health than one that's done 40,000 school runs.
Buy if: you genuinely do long runs. Not “sometimes”. Regularly.
2.0 TDI — the mile-eater, and the GTD
150 PS in the mainstream car, 184 in the GTD. This is the engine that makes sense of a diesel Mk7: it has proper torque, it's relaxed at speed, and it'll do 55+ mpg while doing it. The GTD in particular is one of the more coherent things VW built in this era — quick enough, and able to cross a continent on about a tank and a half.
Same DPF logic as the 1.6, same journey-profile requirement.
Buy if: you do 15,000+ miles a year, most of it in one go.
The EA288 sits in the long shadow of Dieselgate, and “was it affected, was it fixed, does the fix matter” is genuinely tangled — it varies by market, model year and engine. Choose by sentence, not by spec
Find the line that describes your actual life rather than your imagined one:
- “I drive 25 miles a day, mostly alone, mostly urban.” → 1.0 TSI, and enjoy how cheap it is.
- “I want a Golf. I don't have a strong opinion beyond that.” → 1.4 TSI. Correct answer. Move on with your life.
- “I do 20,000 miles a year up and down a motorway.” → 2.0 TDI, and the DPF will never trouble you.
- “I do 6,000 miles a year of short trips.” → Not a diesel. Not any diesel. Please.
- “I want it to be quick but I don't want anyone to notice.” → 1.8 TSI.
- “I want the GTI.” → Then buy the GTI. Just cost a set of tyres first, and read the Mk7 vs Mk7.5 piece before you decide which one.
The EA211 cars (1.0/1.4/1.5) will present you with a water pump bill. The EA888 cars (1.8/2.0) will present you with tyres, and possibly oil. The EA288 diesels will present you with a DPF — but only if you buy one for the wrong life.
None of these are reasons not to buy. They're just the price of entry, and the entire difference between a happy Mk7 owner and an unhappy one is whether they knew the price before they paid it.
