Volkswagen Golf Mk7 Owners Manual: Locking and unlocking the vehicle from the inside

Fig. 29 shows the central locking button in the driver door of the Volkswagen Golf Mk7: one press locks the car, another unlocks it. The button only works with the ignition on or off when every door is closed, and this page explains the specific behaviour that applies if the car was previously locked using the vehicle key rather than from inside.

The central locking button functions with the ignition switched on or off only when all doors are closed.

If the vehicle has been locked with the vehicle key, the central locking button does not work.

Please note the following when using the central locking button to lock the vehicle:

  • The indicator lamp in the button   lights up yellow when all doors and the tailgate are closed and locked.
  • In vehicles with SAFELOCK mechanism: the SAFELOCK mechanism is not activated   .
  • The anti-theft alarm will not be activated.
  • It is not possible to open the doors or tailgate from the outside, for instance when stopped at traffic lights.
  • The doors can be unlocked and opened from the inside by pulling the door release handle. The indicator lamp in all doors switches off. You may have to pull the door release lever more than once. The unopened doors and tailgate remain locked and cannot be opened from the outside.

In some cases, the vehicle automatically unlocks all doors and the tailgate   when:

  • The button is pressed  .
  • The vehicle comes to a standstill and the vehicle key is removed.
  • One vehicle door is opened depending on menu settings in the infotainment system   .

    Questions & answers

Locking and unlocking the vehicle from the inside — Volkswagen Golf Mk7

Where is the central locking button inside the Golf Mk7?
It is in the driver door panel. Pressing it locks or unlocks all doors and the tailgate. It works with the ignition on or off, but only when all doors are closed.
Does the Golf Mk7 interior locking button work if the car was locked with the key?
No. If the vehicle was locked from outside using the key or Keyless Access, the interior central locking button is disabled — this is a theft-prevention feature.
What does the yellow indicator lamp on the Golf Mk7 central locking button mean?
The lamp lights yellow when all doors and the tailgate are locked. If it does not light, at least one door or the tailgate is not fully closed or locked.
Can passengers unlock the Golf Mk7 from inside in an emergency?
Each door has a manual release lever that works mechanically, even if the central locking button is disabled. In an emergency, pulling the interior door handle opens that door regardless of the locking state, unless SAFELOCK is engaged.
Does the Golf Mk7 lock automatically when I start driving?
This is configurable. Automatic locking while driving can be switched on or off in the infotainment system's vehicle settings under the 'Open and Close' menu.
