Volkswagen Golf Mk7 Service & Repair Manual: Removing and installing ignition/starter switch

This page covers removing the Volkswagen Golf Mk7 ignition/starter switch — remove the lower steering column trim, disconnect the connector, then use jeweller's screwdrivers in the release recesses.

Removing
–  Remove lower steering column trim → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.68.
   
–  Disconnect electrical connector -1-.
–  Insert jeweller screwdrivers into recesses -arrows- in steering lock housing -4- to release retaining clips -2 and 3-.
 

Removing and installing ignition/starter switch

If this procedure cannot be applied due to lack of space, make an auxiliary tool consisting of 2 wire hooks by carrying out the steps below.
–  Bend end of welding rod (1 mm in diameter) into an eye.
–  Cut welding wire to length -a-.
Dimension -a - = approx. 50 mm.
–  File end of wire hook to a point.
Dimension -b- = 5 mm.
 

Removing and installing ignition/starter switch

–  Pull ignition/starter switch -D--5- out of steering lock housing while ensuring that jeweller screwdriver or wire hooks remain inserted.
Installing
Install in the reverse order of removal, observing the following:
–  Insert ignition/starter switch -D- into steering lock housing until it engages audibly.
