Volkswagen Golf Mk7 Owners Manual: Introduction

The lane departure warning system (Lane Assist) on the Volkswagen Golf Mk7 uses a camera in the windscreen to detect lane markings and warn — or gently correct — if the car drifts toward a boundary without signalling. This introduction previews the display, function and deactivation pages that follow.

This chapter contains information on the following subjects:

WARNING

The intelligent technology of the lane departure warning system (Lane Assist) cannot change the laws of physics or the system-related vehicle limitations. Careless or unintentional use of Lane Assist can cause accidents and severe injuries. The system is not a substitute for the full concentration of the driver.
  • Adapt your speed and distance from the vehicles ahead to suit visibility, weather, road and traffic conditions.
  • Your hands should always be on the steering wheel so that you can steer at any time. The driver is always responsible for staying in lane.
  • Lane Assist cannot detect all road markings. Poor road surfaces, road structures or objects can be detected incorrectly as road markings by Lane Assist. Lane Assist should be switched off immediately in these situations.
  • Follow the information in the instrument cluster display and respond according to the commands.
  • Always pay close attention to what is happening around the vehicle.
  • If the camera's field of view is dirty, covered or damaged, the function of the lane departure warning system may be impaired.

NOTICE

Please observe the following points in order to avoid impairing the proper function of the system:
  • Regularly clean the camera's field of view, and keep it free from snow and ice.
  • Do not cover the camera's field of view.
  • Check the area of the windscreen that is in the camera's field of view for damage.

Lane Assist has been developed solely for use on surfaced roads.

If Lane Assist does not function as described in this chapter, do not use Lane Assist and proceed to a qualified workshop.

If there is a fault in the system, go to a qualified workshop and have the system checked.

    Questions & answers

    Introduction — Volkswagen Golf Mk7

How does Golf Mk7 Lane Assist detect lanes?
A camera behind the windscreen, near the interior mirror, reads the lane markings painted on the road surface. The system requires visible, well-maintained markings to function.
Is Golf Mk7 Lane Assist always active?
It must be switched on via the Assist menu or the driver assist button on the lever. Once activated, it is active above approximately 65 km/h and only when lane markings are detected.
Does the Golf Mk7 Lane Assist warn or steer?
It can do both. It vibrates the steering wheel as a warning and simultaneously applies a gentle corrective steering force to guide the car back into the lane.
