Fig. 75 and Fig. 76 show the location and deployment zone of the driver knee airbag, fitted in the lower part of the dash panel on the Volkswagen Golf Mk7 and marked with the text AIRBAG. This page explains what the knee airbag protects against and why nothing should ever be mounted in its marked deployment zone.

First read and observe the introductory information and safety warnings 

The knee airbag on the driver side is located in the lower part of the dash panel  . The airbag location is identified by the text AIRBAG.

The area in the red frame   is covered by the knee airbag when triggered (deployment zone). For this reason, you must never leave or attach any items in this area.

WARNING

Once triggered, the airbag inflates at high speed.
  • The knee airbag is deployed in the area in front of the driver's knees. Always leave the knee airbag's deployment zone clear.
  • Never secure any items on the cover or in the deployment zone of the knee airbag.
  • Adjust the driver seat so there is at least 10 cm between the knees and location of the knee airbag. Contact a qualified workshop if your physical build makes this impracticable.

    Knee airbags — Volkswagen Golf Mk7

    Where is the knee airbag on the Golf Mk7?
    It is in the lower part of the dash panel on the driver side, marked with the word AIRBAG. It deploys downward to cushion the driver's knees and lower legs.
    What does the Golf Mk7 knee airbag protect?
    It reduces leg and knee injuries in a frontal collision by preventing the driver's legs from striking the steering column and lower dash panel.
    Does the Golf Mk7 have a knee airbag for the front passenger?
    No. Only the driver side is equipped with a knee airbag. The front passenger relies on the seat belt, front airbag and side airbag for protection.
    Can incorrect pedal position reduce Golf Mk7 knee airbag effectiveness?
    Yes. If the driver sits too close to the pedals, the knee airbag may not have enough space to deploy correctly. Maintain the recommended 25 cm minimum distance from the steering wheel and 10 cm from the dash at the knees.
