Volkswagen Golf Mk7 Owners Manual: Opening the tailgate

Fig. 36 shows the button on the Volkswagen Golf Mk7 vehicle key used to unlock and open the tailgate remotely, and Fig. 37 shows opening it by hand from outside. This page also covers a practical limitation: the tailgate will not open if something — such as bicycles mounted on a carrier attached to it — is blocking its movement, and what to do about it.

First read and observe the introductory information and safety warnings 

It will not be possible to open the tailgate if, for example, bicycles are mounted on a carrier attached to it  . Remove the load from the carrier and support the open tailgate.

Opening with the vehicle key

Press the button on the vehicle key   for less than approximately 1 second to unlock the tailgate, or press the button on the vehicle key until the tailgate automatically opens by a few millimetres. Then open the tailgate using the Volkswagen badge.

Opening with the Volkswagen emblem

  • Unlock the vehicle or tailgate or open one of the doors.
  • Press the top part of the Volkswagen badge   with your thumb and push out the bottom part of the badge. Grip underneath the badge and lift up the tailgate.

WARNING

Serious injuries can occur if the tailgate is unlocked or opened incorrectly or without due care and attention.
  • It may not always be apparent that the tailgate is unlocked, for example when a loaded luggage carrier is attached to it. If unlocked, the tailgate may open suddenly while the vehicle is in motion.

At outside temperatures lower than 0°C (+32°F), the opening mechanism cannot always lift the opened tailgate automatically. The tailgate then has to be guided up by hand.

    Opening the tailgate — Volkswagen Golf Mk7

    How do I open the Golf Mk7 tailgate from outside?
    Press and hold the tailgate button on the key, or press the VW badge area below the rear window. On Keyless Access models, the badge works without pressing a key button.
    Can I open the Golf Mk7 tailgate if a bike rack is fitted?
    No. A load attached to the tailgate (such as a bike carrier) prevents it from opening safely. Remove the load from the carrier first, and support the tailgate once open.
    Does the Golf Mk7 tailgate open automatically?
    On models with the optional power tailgate, pressing the key button or the badge activates a motorised opening mechanism. On standard models, you lift it manually after releasing the latch.
    Can I open only the tailgate without unlocking the whole Golf Mk7?
    Yes. Pressing and holding the tailgate button on the key unlocks and opens only the tailgate. The doors remain locked.
