Volkswagen Golf Mk7 Owners Manual: Indicator lamp

Fig. 69 shows the dash-panel indicator lamp on the Volkswagen Golf Mk7 confirming whether the front passenger airbag is switched off (variant A) or on (variant B). This page lists what each lamp state means, the cause of a fault indication, and the recommended action — visiting a qualified workshop if the airbag and belt tensioner system reports a problem.

Lit up Location Possible cause Solution
Instrument cluster. Fault in airbag and belt tensioner system. Go to a qualified workshop to have the system checked immediately.
Dash panel   A. Fault in the airbag system. Go to a qualified workshop to have the system checked immediately.
Front passenger front airbag switched off. Check whether the airbag should stay switched off.
Dash panel   B. Front passenger front airbag switched on. No solution – the indicator lamp will disappear automatically approximately 60 seconds after the ignition is switched on, or after the front passenger front airbag is switched on using the key-operated switch.

Several warning and indicator lamps will light up briefly as a functional check when the ignition is switched on. They will switch off after a few seconds.

If the indicator lamp PASSENGER AIR BAG is not continuously lit or if it lights up together with the indicator lamp in the instrument cluster when the front passenger front airbag is switched off, there may be a fault in the airbag system  .

WARNING

If there is a fault in the airbag system, the airbag may not trigger correctly, may not trigger at all or may trigger unexpectedly. This can cause severe or fatal injuries.
  • The airbag system should be checked by a qualified workshop as soon as possible.
  • Never fit a child seat to the front passenger seat or remove a child seat that is already fitted. The front passenger front airbag may trigger during an accident in spite of the fault.

NOTICE

To avoid damage to your vehicle, always observe the indicator lamps and associated warning texts.

    Questions & answers

Indicator lamp — Volkswagen Golf Mk7

What does the Golf Mk7 airbag indicator lamp show?
A lamp in the dash panel shows whether the front passenger airbag is switched on or off. An amber lamp in the instrument cluster signals a fault in the airbag or belt tensioner system.
What should I do if the Golf Mk7 airbag warning lamp stays on?
Visit a qualified workshop as soon as possible. A persistent airbag warning means the system may not deploy correctly in a collision.
Does the Golf Mk7 airbag lamp light up at ignition?
Yes. It illuminates briefly as a bulb check when the ignition is switched on and should go out after a few seconds. If it stays on or flashes, there is a fault.
Where is the Golf Mk7 front passenger airbag status indicator?
An indicator lamp at the top of the centre console shows ON or OFF, confirming whether the front passenger airbag is currently active or deactivated.
