For technical reasons, the following vehicles cannot be tow-started:
- Vehicles with an automatic gearbox.
- Vehicles with the Keyless Access locking and starting system, as the electronic steering column lock may not disengage.
- If the vehicle battery has discharged, the engine control units will not function properly.
However, if the vehicle still has to be tow-started (manual gearbox):
- Engage second or third gear.
- Keep the clutch pressed down.
- Switch on the ignition and the hazard warning lights.
- Once both vehicles are in motion, release the clutch.
- As soon as the engine starts, press the clutch and put the gear into neutral. This helps to prevent driving into the towing vehicle.

How do I tow-start a Golf Mk7 with a manual gearbox?
Attach the tow rope, ignition on, 2nd or 3rd gear selected, clutch depressed. When the tow vehicle pulls you to about 15 km/h, release the clutch smoothly. The engine should fire.
Why can't I tow-start a Golf Mk7 DSG?
The DSG gearbox requires electrical oil pressure to engage the clutches. Without the engine running, no oil pressure is generated, so the clutches cannot engage — the engine will not start.
What about tow-starting a Golf Mk7 diesel with a DPF?
Tow-starting can flood the exhaust with unburnt fuel, damaging the DPF. Use jump leads to start a diesel engine.
